Cracked Heels

Cracked heels (heel fissures) are a very common problem that may cause dryness, pain, burning sensation, and difficulty walking. They usually begin as marked dry skin and thickening of the skin (hyperkeratosis) and, when the area is subjected to pressure, the skin “opens”, creating cracks that in more advanced cases may bleed or become inflamed.

How do they develop

The most common contributing factors are heredity, skin dehydration, prolonged standing, open or inappropriate footwear, increased body weight, and incorrect mechanical loading of the foot. Dermatological conditions (e.g. eczema/psoriasis) and disorders such as diabetes mellitus or circulatory problems may also play a role, in which case more careful management is required.

How are they treated

Effective treatment is not just “moisturising”. It requires proper removal of hyperkeratosis, offloading of areas exposed to increased pressure, and targeted daily home care. With professional treatment, the thickened and dehydrated skin is removed safely, the tendency of the skin to crack is reduced, and the fissures can gradually heal.

What the care includes

– Safe removal of hyperkeratosis and smoothing of the heel skin
– Care of heel fissures and protection of the area when needed
– Specialised moisturising/repair treatments (e.g. with urea), depending on the case
– Preventive advice: proper footwear, daily moisturising routine, and avoidance of incorrect handling at home
– In recurrent cases: assessment of loading and possible offloading/support with appropriate aids or orthotic insoles

When is a podiatrist needed

If the cracks are deep, painful, bleeding, show redness/swelling, or if you have diabetes mellitus or vascular problems, it is important to be assessed by a podiatrist. Proper intervention reduces the risk of infection and helps achieve faster and safer recovery.

If your heels are cracking or causing discomfort while walking, do not let the problem worsen. Book an appointment at Podcare for assessment and targeted care, so that comfort and the health of your skin can be restored.
