It occurs most commonly in the big toe and may worsen if not treated properly and in a timely manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Causes and Risk Factors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 <strong>Incorrect nail trimming:<\/strong> Cutting the nail too short or curved increases the risk of it growing into the skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 <strong>Tight shoes or high heels:<\/strong> These place pressure on the nail, forcing it to grow inward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 <strong>Nail injuries:<\/strong> Dropping an object on the nail or repeated minor trauma (e.g. in athletes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 <strong>Genetic predisposition:<\/strong> In some individuals, the nails naturally have a curved shape, increasing the likelihood of ingrowth into the skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 <strong>Fungal infections:<\/strong> These may alter the shape of the nail, leading to ingrowth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 <strong>Excessive sweating of the feet:<\/strong> This softens the skin and makes it more vulnerable to pressure from the nail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Pain and tenderness around the nail, especially during walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Redness and swelling on the side of the nail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Inflammation or infection: swelling, discharge of pus, and increased temperature in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Swelling of the skin around the nail, which may form hypertrophic tissue (granulation tissue).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Professional Treatment by a Podiatrist<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.
