It is one of the most common causes of heel pain, particularly affecting people who walk a great deal or stand for prolonged periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Causes and Risk Factors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plantar fasciitis is usually caused by excessive loading or strain on the plantar fascia, leading to microtrauma and inflammation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Mechanical causes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Prolonged standing or intense physical activity (e.g. running, jumping).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Abnormal gait or imbalance in weight distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Excess body weight, which increases pressure on the plantar fascia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Factors related to foot anatomy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Flat feet or pes cavus, which cause increased pressure on the sole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Heel spur, which may coexist with plantar fasciitis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Inappropriate footwear<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Hard or thin soles that do not absorb shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 High heels, which place additional strain on the plantar fascia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Age and physiological changes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Age 40\u201360 years, as the plantar fascia tissue gradually loses its elasticity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Intense heel pain (particularly on the inner side).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Pain in the morning, during the first steps after getting out of bed, which decreases as the foot \u201cwarms up\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Worsening of pain after prolonged standing or after rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 A burning sensation or stiffness in the sole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Reduced flexibility in the arch of the foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Diagnosis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diagnosis is made through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Clinical examination by a podiatrist or orthopaedic specialist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 X-ray (to rule out fracture).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Magnetic resonance imaging in very persistent cases to assess inflammation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Management and Treatment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Conservative treatments<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Rest and avoidance of overuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Cryotherapy: Ice for 10\u201315 minutes, 3\u20134 times a day, to reduce inflammation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Anti-inflammatory medication (ibuprofen, naproxen) for temporary relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Physiotherapy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Stretching exercises for the plantar fascia and the Achilles tendon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Strengthening of the foot muscles for better support of the arch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Orthotic insoles for support, offloading, and pain relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Avoidance of intense exercise and modification of activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Minimally invasive treatments for severe inflammation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Shockwave Therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Laser therapy to reduce inflammation and accelerate healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prevention<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Proper footwear with good support and shock absorption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Regular stretching of the plantar fascia and foot muscles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Weight management to reduce pressure on the sole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Avoidance of sudden increases in physical activity without warm-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When to Visit the Podiatrist<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 If the pain persists for more than 2\u20133 weeks despite conservative treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 If the pain is severe and affects daily activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 If there are symptoms of a heel spur or other underlying conditions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-gray-100-background-color has-background\">Plantar fasciitis is a common but manageable condition.
