This may lead to instability, pain, and an increased risk of injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Causes and Risk Factors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pes cavus may be hereditary (idiopathic) or may develop as a result of neurological or musculoskeletal disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Genetic factors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 It often occurs in families with a history of pes cavus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Neurological disorders<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Conditions such as Charcot\u2013Marie\u2013Tooth disease, cerebral palsy, and muscular dystrophy may lead to an excessively high arch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Injuries or muscular imbalances<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Damage to nerves or muscles that affects the shape of the foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Developmental or degenerative conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Arthritis or tendon dysfunction that alters the distribution of forces in the foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 An excessively high arch, which may be visible even when the foot is at rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Foot pain, especially in the metatarsal region, the toes, or the ankle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Instability while walking due to a reduced support surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Increased pressure on the metatarsals and the heel, which may cause calluses or ulcers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Stiffness and reduced flexibility of the foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Frequent ankle sprains due to reduced balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Muscle weakness or toe deformities (e.g. hammer toes, claw toes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Diagnosis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diagnosis is made by a podologist-podiatrist or an orthopaedic specialist through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Clinical examination to assess the structure and mobility of the foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Plantar pressure assessment to evaluate weight distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 X-rays or CT scan, if there is suspicion of an underlying pathological cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Neurological testing, if pes cavus is associated with neuropathies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Management and Treatment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment depends on the severity of pes cavus and on whether it is associated with neurological or musculoskeletal disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Orthotic insoles, which help reduce pressure and improve stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Special footwear with shock absorption and good arch support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Physiotherapy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Exercises to strengthen the foot muscles and improve balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Stretching exercises to reduce stiffness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Avoidance of high heels and rigid footwear that increase pressure on the metatarsals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prevention<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Assessment by a podologist-podiatrist if there are early signs of pes cavus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Proper choice of footwear with support and shock absorption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Avoidance of activities that place excessive strain on the feet, if there is a predisposition to pain or injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Regular stretching and strengthening of the plantar muscles to maintain function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When to Visit the Podiatrist<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 If pes cavus causes chronic pain or difficulty walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 If there is instability or frequent ankle injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 If symptoms worsen over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 If there is suspicion of a neurological disorder, especially if muscle weakness or gait asymmetry is observed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Pes cavus may significantly affect gait and quality of life, but with proper diagnosis and treatment, symptoms can be managed effectively.
