Nail Fungus or Nail Injury?

Changes in the appearance and texture of the nails may indicate an underlying condition that should not be ignored. Patients often notice changes in the color, texture, or thickness of their nails without being able to correctly identify the cause. Two of the most common causes of such alterations are fungal nail infections (onychomycosis) and mechanical nail trauma.

Onychomycosis

Onychomycosis is a common fungal infection of the nails caused by dermatophytes, Trichophyton species, or yeasts. It most frequently affects the toenails due to:

• Increased moisture
• Use of tight and poorly ventilated footwear
• Inadequate hygiene

Clinical characteristics:

• Nail discoloration (commonly yellowish, white, or brown)
• Thickening, brittleness, or crumbling of the nail
• Deformation or separation of the nail plate
• Possible odor or inflammation around the affected nail area

Nail Trauma

Mechanical stress or nail trauma (for example, from sports activities, tight footwear, or direct injury) may cause:

• Subungual hematoma
• Thickening due to hyperkeratosis
• Deformation, separation, or even loss of the nail

Treatment and Therapeutic Approach

Successful treatment depends on an accurate diagnosis. At the PODCARE podiatry center, a combined therapeutic approach is applied:

• Clinical assessment
• Podiatric cleaning and removal of the fungal-infected or damaged part of the nail
• Topical or oral antifungal treatment in cases of onychomycosis
• Evaluation of biomechanical factors related to gait or footwear that may cause chronic trauma
• Preventive guidance to reduce the risk of recurrence

Incorrect or delayed treatment increases the risk of complications, spread of the infection to adjacent nails, and recurrence.

At PODCARE, scientific monitoring and professional follow-up are provided throughout the entire treatment process. Early diagnosis and treatment reduce recovery time and help restore the natural health of the nails completely.
